The same happened to my Kindle 3. It was freezing at the tree and when trying to uninstall a hack or upgrade to the Kindle new firmware, I was getting the "update error 3".
After reading NiLuJe's (helpful posts inthie thread) I realized that I overloaded the fonts directory with too many fonts (some were huge more than 2 MB) taking up about a total of 36MB size. I quickly deleted that linkfonts folder and hard rebooted the kindle using the 15 seconds methods and its started fine.
Try this method and lets us know.
