Err, this is by no means restricted to Apple. Most commercial ebooks are limited in the same way, whether you buy them from Amazon, Apple, Sony etc.

Notable exceptions include Angry Robot books and O'Reilly (who make all their excellent technical books available multi-format without DRM)
