The 'story' is (and who really knows if it's true) that women rich enough to have clothes that buttoned were rich enough to have maids that dressed them. To close a button most people use their right hands, so to allow the maids to do the work, they reversed the sides. The men dressed themselves. I'm left-handed but always close buttons with my right hand... go figure!
