I remember the Cinco de Mayo celebrations in So.Cal when I lived there back in the late 60's. They really did it up right in L.A.!
I've noticed that many different cultures 'adopt' various holidays, giving them slightly different meanings. Japan celebrates 'Thanksgiving' but for workers giving thanks to their employers. Thailand celebrates 'Mother's Day' but as the Queen's day, etc.
