J.C. Rolfe’s complete translation of the fourth-century history of Ammianus Marcellinus, originally published in 1935-40 as three volumes of the bilingual Loeb Classical Library. The text, which is in the public domain, is taken from Bill Thayer’s meticulous transcription at
LacusCurtius.
It is with some regret that I have omitted Rolfe’s footnotes, which are generally helpful, if occasionally wrong; but the labor required, not least that of linking his many cross-references, was daunting and would have jeopardized the completion of the project.
As I write this, the only other translation available as an e-book is that by C.D. Yonge, originally published in 1862.
This is my first effort at creating and uploading an e-book. Any feedback will be appreciated.
