The apps were in the messed up market on this thing, but the file explorer will not see the books I load onto it via usb. I restarted it multiple times and tried putting the folder in different places on the sd card. Grrrr, this is the 4th android device I've worked with and its by far the most frustrating. Right now, I'm emailing zipped folders of ebooks to my gmail and downloading them on the device. I'm sure there's some step I missing. Surely there can't be a modern device that works so poorly with the sd card, right?

Nope. Mine is LONG gone and so are many others, but you can try looking in the forum on slatedroid.com. This tablet has it's own forum and there were some hacks made for it, including one to get gapps and hence Android market access(partial), but be aware apparently there are at least two hw versions of this and the custom fw are NOT compatible last I read(around January)... just didn't care to bother following it up as I found out accidentally...
Other than hacking, you can go to setting and allow non-market installs if it's not already set and download some ebook readers from sites like freewarelovers, slideme, etc. Probably can even sideload the Amazon app store app on it now as well...
