I read the first book. Collins is a pretty good writer, and it's definitely better than a lot of the recently popular YA stuff. Yes, it's a ripoff of Koushun Takami's Battle Royale, in that it not only borrows the concept but directly takes scenes from it, but I'm pretty forgiving of such things so long as they're done well.

I felt that Collins cheaped out at the end.

She should have had to kill Peeta. Taking the easy way out compromised emotional depth and complexity. It also suggests that ultimately, the story isn't going to take any major bold moves, which makes it predictable.
