i'm looking for ebooks...

in detective/mystery, fantasy or urban fantasy but with the following in common:

No focus on romance (a little is okay if it fits in naturally)

No cutesy stuff (a little humor is fine, but no cupcake makers, bed and breakfasts, heavy focus on pets, small children being extra cute or unrealistically precocious

Well-fleshed out characters who feel like real people

No unrelenting misery

Little or no goofy humor

No focus on how gorgeous the main characters are. i started a book the other day that started wutg 5 good sized paragraphs describing just how very gorgeous some woman was, complete with detailed - VERY detailed description. she may or may not have been the main character, but I moved on. yeesh!

Nice and long ebooks or series preferred

If fantasy or magical, I prefer the magic to be a counterpoint against a realistic world or to be realistically woven in so it feels genuine.

fairly contemporary language. peter wimsey is fine.

Any ideas?
