The Barnes and Noble website says this exactly.

Come in to any Barnes & Noble store and show us your old eReader. When you buy any NOOK, we'll give you 30 FREE books to start your NOOK library - a $315 value!

I went to a Barnes and Noble store to do just this. The first thing the staff does is look on a list. If your e reader is not on the list, they will not let you upgrade to a NOOK. They are targeting only certain e readers. The website is misleading.

So the offer is not just for any e reader, it must be on their list. The staff called Barnes and Noble service to determine that mine was not on the list.

So you be the judge. It seems that something is wrong.
According to the wording you posted here, you should argue that your reader qualifies and get the sd card and books. It is lame that only a selected set or readers qualify though.
