It's not a hardware issue as far as I can tell. I took a screen capture on my Kindle, made it a screen saver on my Nook, and they were virtually indistinguishable in contrast/clarity.

What's not clear is which layer of technology would need to be addressed: fonts, Adobe SDK, device driver, etc.

What is strange to me is that the B&N Nook forums and nookboards don't seem to have anyone complaining about this. Granted traffic there is minimal but I don't see how people can not notice unless they never use font smaller than size 4. Or maybe they have no reference for comparison.
