Hi theducks,
re: windows drive errors - program and OS (xp sp3 all updates installed) -- should I do chkdsk on my 1 tb drive? I may die of old age first. Or, do it on the boot drive which is where Calibre program lives also. RAM brand new, just installed. And not to sound like an idiot but I do not know what Ubuntu even is....

I am going to reinstall latest version, then shut down everything, including eset. I checked my fonts folder, nothing in there but fonts (gosh!)

Thanks for the tip for the tag browser. I did figure one thing out, and this may be significant. I got a handle on sub-cat settings, and discovered that sorting by setting to first letter makes a crash on every metadata edit - including changing covers, changing text in the description box, changing genre or deleting a book. Using disabled seems to help some.

Going to try a few other things before chkdsk, since I do not want to disable my entire laptop for the time it will take to do it, since I need access to that drive all day long for other things.

eta: discovery - .net optimization module service running due to a .net update.
More about this here

and I found that Adobe Elements file tracker service was running. I recently installed it to replace photoshop. I shut that down also. Since it monitors all image types like the jpegs and pngs I am working with in covers, it may interfere and cause crashing there.

Checked event monitoring while I was nosing about in the mgmt module. Found my errors are all occurring as:

Faulting application calibre.exe version 0.8.7.0 faulting module python27.dll version2.7.1150.1013 fault address 0x00008bc5

There are 40 of them from yesterday alone. SO... checked system for possible dupe of python libraries and found that dropbox uses python 25. Could that be creating a conflict? Did not have drop box running, plus both those dlls are in their respective folders, not in windows dll folder or cache.
