To use ADE, first attach your ereader, then launch ADE. The ereader should show up in ADE's browser panel. Then drag and drop the book onto the ereader icon.

And that's exactly what I did. The point being that the books open in ADE on my computer, but when I load them onto the ereader (as you said) they don't open, unlike the books that I have bought with DRM. Overdrive lists Hanlin as being incompatible along with a heap of others, it's not that there's a problem with ADE, it seems to be a problem with Overdrive. As the Hanlin reads Epub I had assumed it would be ok for library use.
