How long is a piece of string? For one book it should be a question of minutes or less, but dump 100+ books on the Kindle and you're looking at several hours or overnight. Dump many hundreds onto the device at one time and indexing could just choke up, as several users (myself included) have found.

Indexing is a contentious point among owners, but Amazon put it in and we're stuck with it. Just remember if you're dumping a considerable number of books onto the device at one time, to leave it plugged in for several hours thereafter or your battery will take a substantial hit.
