Since you're enlightened enough to like SciFi (as I do myself), if you haven't already done so, you should have a look at Baen's
Webscriptions service, they just added support for the Sony Reader, and they offer a number of free samples by way of their
Free Library. None of their books have any DRM, and they usually price them $6 or less.
As for "regular" libraries, a fair number of them do have ebook programs, particularly in larger cities (San Diego certainly
ought to qualify). However, they usually use formats that won't work on the Reader.
Hopefully, all this e-reading device activity will move us closer to a day when we have a "standard" format that is accepted and supported by all the players, and we won't have that sort of problem. I can dream, anyway.
