Interesting. Yesterday I want to BN fully expecting
not to buy a nook touch, and left
with one. I was really impressed by the responsiveness of the touch screen and the contrast of the newer version display. I was also blown away by the tiny size, I found it very comfortable to hold. I am a big fan of the industrial design of the 1st edition nook, so I wasn't expecting to like this new one. I was very, very pleasantly surprised. I've been playing with it for the last two days and have not had any major, dealbreaker kind of problems with it.
For the record: I'm a longtime ebook reader who has been using eink devices for about 4 years now. The ghosting on the new nook doesn't bother me one bit, as it's still quite a bit less ghosting than I was accustomed to on my Sony 505. I never used the games, music or web browser feature on my 1st gen nook (3g), except to try them out once or twice. I'm pretty sure the nook touch was designed precisely for a consumer like me, who just wants their device to read and not do much else. I don't particularly want to shop on the thing, even.
Now, if we could customize the library view, that would be gangbusters.
