The staff has claimed that the S/N on my Nook is wiped off their data base with my B&N account. But I am getting the error message of:

Sorry we're having trouble setting up your Nook. Please shutdown the device and try again.

If the problem persists, contact Customer Support at 1-800-THE-BOOK (1-800-843-2665)

And there's nothing I can do about it! The staff says the only way out is to return the device (but that is not possible, I'm outside the states and they are unable to ship a replacement unit to where I live)

Are there anyone who faced a similar (or perhaps, the same!?) problem as I did?

Can anybody help? I know I can go about rooting the device (which I probably will) but I'm seeing if there is any way out other than rooting it.. I'm afraid if after rooting, I might not be able to receive firmware upgrades (although devs will most probably support them...)
I can't help. You can still receive firmware upgrades by sideloading them (download from bn.com). They won't automatically install as if you had an Internet connection. You may have to unroot first in order for the update to take and reroot again. Sometimes you may be able to install over root using what's available at xdadevelopers.
