I realize this thread is about the "email" feature particularly, but I'll point out to all the 3G-only owners that there is, as far as I can tell, no charge for downloading documents via the Kindle web browser, even over 3G.
So you can get your books via Calibre's content server, or any web host, or if you have web-based email, you can email yourself documents, and download them to the Kindle by accessing your mail via the browser.

For services like GMail, this is actually easier on the K2 browser than on the K3.

For me, by the way, I use wifi email delivery of books almost exclusively now. I haven't plugged my Kindle in to a computer in recent memory.

As I have no interest in paying for a smartphone data plan right now, I also use the Kindle to get my regular email and other minor Internet tasks done while on the road.

The Internet feature was one of the main selling points of the Kindle for me.
