I definitely has a better "feel" to it being rubberized, and seems to be more durable. The original Kobo finish was very easy to scratch despite being a hard plastic and didn't feel as good quality.

Good summary -- that's my experience with the Kobo Touch black. I had wanted the white with blue back but it's not being sold by Chapters in Canada and I didn't want to wait till supplies started to arrive at Best Buy this weekend.
I really like the white finish of the Original Kobo and the Kobo WiFi and I have not noticed any scratching in my normal use (I have yet to buy a cover or case as the $30 Roots slip covers are attractive but too pricey for me).
With three Kobo ereaders, I admit the black was chosen so I would spot it easily in the stack
