At first, I thought, "Man! this guy is playing rather brtually with our emotions!" But the more I thought about it, the more authentic this seems to me. In the middle ages, these type of people played for keeps and lots of worthy well meaning (and unworthy, ill meaning) people got caught unwillingly in other people's schemes and THAT put an end to their plans and schemes.
