Er, that IS the way people pronounce his name here in the UK. How do you say it?
I was amazed, when I first visited to US, to hear someone pronounce the name of the painter "van Gogh" as "van GO". We pronounce "Gogh" to rhyme with the Scottish "loch", which I believe is reasonably close to the Dutch original.
