I have similar requirements for an eReader. I need it mostly for programming books (generally PDF and sometimes CHM). I decided to buy a used Kindle DX 3G (White). Kindle DX has support for PDF files, but no zoom or bookmarks. Zoom is no big deal as I can crop PDF files in Mac OS X Preview (takes a couple of minutes). I made my decision after I learned that it is possible to install Duokan OS (dualboot) onto Kindle to get support for CHM, ePUB and broader PDF functions (zoom and bookmarks). I can not tell you about my experience yet, as I am still waiting for it to arrive from US.
