I think the emphasis is on lack of features at a reduced price. It's not the standard iPad argument where Android tablets are compared.
If someone makes use of all the features on the NOOK original I can certainly see why they wouldn't want to "downgrade".
The comparison to the 950 isn't that great, because with the NOOK you have access to a very good bookstore (including the ability to download samples). I'm a fan of the 950 having owned the 900. I considered it more than once, but had to pass because I never bought anything from the Sony bookstore. Why would I pay ($299) for features (3g and WiFi ) I'll never use. Now, at the price of $199 I'd be more content with solely sideloading content. It's a wonderful device with that large screen.
One of the things that irks me with the NOOK and Kindle is the 6" screen. After experiencing the Sony you always notice the difference.
