There are provisions called
DRM (see our wiki). Some forms can be broken if someone really wants to steal the book. DRM is usually added by the publisher. Currently there are three different forms, Apple, Barnes and Noble, and Adobe. They are not compatible in that a particular eBook reader can only read one of the forms although general computers might have apps for all three. The Adobe system is most common.
There are other more non-invasive techniques such as search google to see if any unauthorized person is selling the book.
