The point is with Wifi he does not have to mess with any software outside of what is on the device. Also if you make buying from the Sony store more convenient you make more money on books.
Sony should be thinking like they do with their consoles and expect a certain attach rate with each sell of one of its E-readers.
I do agree 3g is the best but does not really seem necessary. When there is Wifi signals on just about every corner.

Not sure how you would configure the router without it being connected to a computer.
Plugging in a router straight from the box will get you nowhere as far as I am aware. Unless things are hugely different in the US you need to enter your username and password to be able to connect to your ISP.
And you would also need to be able to log into the router to set up the security, unless of course you intend to run your connection wide open.
