My own mother is sadly no longer with us - but as I am in my 60's I'll probably be in the same age group as many MR mums. We have 5 computers at home - 2 notebooks and 3 desktops - between the 2 of us. I use them for complex music technology, web page work and anything else I can think of. Being back at university I am horrified to find that the students 1/3 my age ask me to help them with computer issues! So, don't assume that anyone you talk to who is over 40 is also a computer illiterate - I happily shoot down in flames various computer sales people and so called "help lines" who do this, my brain didn't stop working once I passed 25 years old!
We also use ebook readers as well as computer driven telescopes and other complex recording equipment, and they didn't come in a box marked "under 18 only"

And my mum (who died several years ago in her 80's) used her "hand me down" computer quite happily for correspondence and even played the odd game!
