You can get books from a number of different places. Calibre even has a built in search (Get books feature in the toolbar) that helps you find books. You can get all the free books you and and still buy from Amazon.

Where you might run into a problem is with DRM. You can't read a book you've bought from Amazon (in most cases) on the EB 511 for instance due to DRM. Calibre can convert between many different ebook formats and will do this automatically when you send an ebook to a device. However, it cannot convert DRM protected files.
