Using just a blank background will give you the fastest speeds. Almost no lag at all. The rule of thumb is, the more there is in your background paper, the slower the writing will be. (Although I don't find any of them too slow to use.) So lined paper yields a quicker response than graph paper, but if you don't need lines, go naked!
