On NOOK 1st Edition, you don't need to go to the store to see the coupons. I don't know about the new NOOK. The coupons only appear occasionally (once every few months), and the ones for food/drink only apply at B&N stores that have a B&N Cafe, as opposed to ones with a connected Starbucks store.
Read In Store is worthless where I live, because there's no place in the stores to sit and read. This is a local decision by the store management, but from what I've heard, the majority of B&N stores have removed most of their chairs. The booksellers won't even let you sit on the floor to read.
Read In Store is controlled by the publishers. Some e-books are eligible for Read In Store, others aren't. You can't tell which are and which aren't except by going to the store and trying them.
