Because charcoal has the ability to absorb impurities and odors from liquids. All those
water filters that you see being sold to attach to the
kitchen sink tap use charcoal inside their refill cartridges! I think "Brita" filters are sold in Belgium, right?
Amazon.com sells 111 different ones (when you search 'charcoal water filters for coffee makers') Hospital Emergency Rooms administer charcoal orally when someone is brought in who has taken too many pills or is in the first stages of food poisoning. Doing a Google search of 'charcoal water filters' brings up 2,800,000 hits.
It works. Especially good in areas that use a lot of chlorine in the water, or have a high sulfur level. It really does make the water taste better.
