Actually, they're not all that unique. Microsoft has, for years, muscled its way into software arenas where there were already established leaders (c.f, Internet Explorer vs. Netscape, Microsoft Word vs. WordPerfect, Lotus 123 vs. Excel).

I think the most unique thing about Apple is the Cult of Jobs. You very rarely (especially in the media) see a company treated so uncritically as Apple has been treated. The first sign of the media not kissing Jobs' posterior was the flap over the iPhone 4 antenna, and from the reaction from the Apple fans, you'd think the press was accusing Jobs of eating the flesh of newborn babies and sucking the marrow from their bones.
