My Dad is an optician, and he's been reading into visual stress - seems like the less harsh screen o an ereader could help. If your friend wants to generalise this improvement she can be tested with coloured lenses - can make a massive improvement for dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, autism... (the list goes on)
