'supported' file types

On the nook 'Specs' web page they say that .jpg, .png., and .gif are among the Supported File Types. Are they just talking about the screensaver, or is there an image viewer built in? If so how does it work?

I added a folder under 'My Files' and put some image files in there. These show up in 'My Files' in the library, but when I try to open them it says "This NOOK(TM) cannot read this file. It may be an unsupported format."

There's nothing in the User Guide about this.
