Like Dave said, BT is a feature that B&N don't even acknowledge to exist, and probably with good reason. The range may be a limitation of the hardware, not something that can be programmed away. As is, the short-range BT overcomes one of the stock NC's greatest shortcomings: incompatibility with hardware keyboards.

If you really must be free to roam, get a BT relay.

Also, dalingrin's Nook Tweaks app may help you with speaker volume.

The NC's inability to recognize a microphone may be a bigger hurdle to Skype. Also, some devices (notably, game controllers) work at considerably greater distances, reported up to 10 feet.
