epub may very well emerge dominant in the end but that end is a long ways off and the epub camps first have to decide among themselves *which* epub is going to try to win. With 3 different epub drm camps and epub3 getting ready to add to the interoperability debate its going to be years before epub can present kindle with a unified challenge.
I would suggest getting whichever device meets your needs best, as HarryT suggested, and learn to DeDRM. Then you won't have a stake in the "war" and can ignore the FUD-slinging.
