There are no iPad killers yet. There are pricey tablet-sized phoneless smartphones, though.
The batttery life of my smartphone endures about a whole day of (non-continuous) reading and continuous music listening. If I get to browse the web, though, or download books, it gets down fairly quickly. Constant usage means about 3 hours or less. I now only check emails and news, unless there's some power outlet nearby.
