Well if you look at the pattern of cell arrangements initially devised the pattern looked like a connection of cells as shown in a chemistry diagram as opposed to the original mobile telephone service which was just a repeater arrangement.
Cell tower diagrams also look like honeycombs so maybe they should have been comb networks and combphones.
