At the risk of imposing actual information on this marvelous romp, that "cell" is short for "cellular" and refers to the arrangements of transceiver towers used for the things, which are arranged in a pattern dubbed as "cellular" by some overbrained schmuck that time has lost through the cracks. Evidently, not even Wikipedia
knows anymore.
