For using it as a universal remote, there are apps and accessories for that. You'd need an bluetooth IR blaster, or one that plugs into the dock port of the ipad. I'm not sure who sells that stuff (don't have an iPhone or iPad), but I've seen it before, and also seen people make it.
You'll need to use an app for streaming DLNA, because Apple does want you to lock into iTunes or AppleTV. I do know there are apps available for it.
