Is it me because I have read so many and have a sense of what the character should be or is it the authors that try to be Fleming and just don't get it?

Does this include the latest Jeffrey Deaver attempt? I have just bought it, but not read yet. I thought that "Devil May Care" by Sebastian Faulks was a real let-down, and was hoping for better things from Deaver.

I gave up as well, after about 5 of them, but my main reason was the TV series, which Reichs has a big hand in. I thought the TV characterisations were
awful, and not at all true to the books. I couldn't read anymore without seeing the actors' faces and getting irritated.
