It is a rumor, but it would make sense that with increased competition, Apple will try to stay ahead of the game.

Samsung, like virtually all Android device manufacturers, uses the cheaper 16x9 displays, while Apple uses wider ratio ones. So the 2560 x 1920 would also make sense.

Apple also has a knack for cornering the market for certain parts it needs, effectively locking out potential competitors.

I wouldn't dismiss this outright.
