Why it matters:
Formats have already come and gone - most of the people posting here are fairly new to ebooks, but they've been around a lot longer than the Kindle or even the Sony. Most of my early ebooks were in .Lit format. Anyone here heard of that? No, probably not.
Amazon was in the ebook business once before. When they got out, they pulled the plug on the entire thing. People lost access to books they had already paid for. It wasn't pretty.
If you think Amazon (or any other supplier) is going to supply you books forever just because it's profitable NOW, you're dreaming. If you think the tech is not going to change and you'll have access to your books forever, you're dreaming.
If you get locked into one store, be it Amazon, Apple or any other, you'll find it painful when you have to change, and some day you WILL have to change.
It's the nature of technology.
I can't believe that in this tech world we live in there are so many naive people.
