I asked the elf who turns off the light in the refrigerator and he wasn't sure.
The paperclip test around the case/bezel shows a strong magnetic field between the camera and the rubber pad on the open edge of the LCD side. Swiping a carry case (containing a strong magnet) from my blackberry across the corresponding edge of the bezel on the E-Ink side caused the LCD screen to shut off.
