I have no problem dropping a series if it goes south or loses interest for me.

A lot of times it isn't even that it goes south but my interests change over time. I'm not really into urban fantasies with lots of supernatural sex these days so I've just dropped Laurell K. Hamilton's Merry Gentry series, for example.

GRRM is another case in point. It was too many years between books. I think I've forgotten most of the characters and plot by now (except what's on the HBO series!). I haven't exactly given up but I'm kind of waiting for the next one to go into the remainder bin or library shelf if you know what I mean. It's not buy-new-hardcover material anymore.
