I've had two more replies from Bookeen. One was the reflash instructions (which unfortunately can't be used as I have to be able to turn the cybook on to reflash the unit) and the second email said the following:

Please try to:
- recharge your Cybook;
- reset your Cybook and switch it on;
- unplug the battery, wait for 10 seconds, replug the battery (red wire towards the bottom) and switch it on.

Again, useless since I can't "switch it on".
So now I'm just waiting on Bookeen to tell me what to do next
