All of the ereaders are tied to some type of format. EPub is a format. The EPub readers all read Adobe DRM and then there is the B&N DRM which can only be read on the Nook. If what you are talking about is being tied to a store based on format that is different.

The store has not been that huge of an issue for people using either format. There are more stores that sell EPub books then Mobi. There are bookstores that sell Mobi books that are not Amazon and the Amazon store is huge.
