It is relatively safe to do as long as you exercise CARE.
1) Do it for Known (personally white-listed) sites.
2) Do NO surfing/mail downloading while during that time.
3) Attach no media that has not been previously vetted.

As to 'Firewall', that can usually stay active, but unless you are on a Public WiFi or have opened up ports on your home Router, the 'nasties' can't force their way past NAT at the door.
