I can operate mine one handed without much difficulty. What I do notice however is that if I leave the screen alone to read for more than a minute, the single tap function to change the page doesn't respond that well (there's at least a 1 second delay or I have to tap again). It's fine once it gets going, but I find that I have to do the swipe instead to turn pages in order to be sure that the IR gets what I want to do.

I think this is why having buttons around even though there's a touch screen is beneficial-- at least until you can get the IR to respond exactly when you want it to. Considering how much more complicated it seems to differentiate IR input vs a simple button, the Kobo developers have their work cutout.
