I came onboard when I got the WAR OF HONOR HC with the bound-in CD and ran through the series to date, minus the antholgies.
The latter volumes I've read as released, which, considering the overlap from the attempts to make the TORCH and TALBOT sidebars stand alone means I've avoided the instant rehash dreariness that reading them back to back would inflict on you.
I suspect a lot of the folks turned off by the current arc in the series are trying to read the six volumes to date back to back.
I suspect that at some point Weber and Flint are going to have to edit the concurrent stories into single Omnibus editions minus the duplicate material but that isn't likely any time soon.
Also, one advantage of time off in between the books is the fun speculation of where Weber is taking the series and watching the clues pile up.
