Disagree about Reacher (you need to read him from the beginning), but I can't believe I haven't thought of mentioning Bob Lee Swagger before now. An excellent series (and the series with his father, Earl). I am still working my way through them, as I don't want to get to the end too quickly. If you like sniper-based high voltage action, with a real tough-guy hero, then I can heartily recommend Stephen Hunter's books.
