There are water proof covers for Kindles. I have one that I use when I am at the beach. Then again, I don't take my Kindle into the water when I am swimming and normally dry off before reading again. If I was on a canoe I would put the kindle in a water proof bag and a water proof stuff sack. Double the protection.
